“I was initially quite skeptical when given the opportunity to engage with a coach; however Cheryl’s professional and very practical approach immediately helped calm any initial concerns. She quickly worked with me to come up with an initial list of focus areas. Rather than being overly prescriptive, Cheryl equipped me with tools and resources to come up with a clear action plan on three specific topics. It wasn’t like I was left alone as Cheryl has a way of asking the right questions and nudging you in the right direction. However only I had the granular background information and the context to create a concrete plan, but Cheryl was with me all along and it wouldn’t have been possible without Cheryl’s active help. It was a very detailed plan with interim goals and timelines and really helped me stay on course. The plan involved making certain organizational changes, improving my communication style (more inspirational than sharing facts/plans), and focusing more on strategy than day-to-day operations. This is an ongoing process but I already feel much more effective, especially when it comes to having difficult conversations and communicating with large groups (both my subordinates and the board). I have received good unsolicited feedback from several people and feel I am on the right track. It has been difficult to find time to work on various tasks but it has been well worth it. Cheryl also worked with me and five of my direct reports in both group and one-on-one settings. She helped uncover issues that were impeding the effective collaboration in the group and leading to unproductive distractions. Her facilitation enabled the team to come up with a clear set of values and practices to follow. This has really enhanced the team’s collective effectiveness and now any real or perceived issues are quickly resolved and the focus returns to value creation. The situation is by no means perfect and this is very much an ongoing journey; however Cheryl has equipped the group with the necessary tools and information to resolve conflicts on their own and to build mutual trust.
